Office of University Librarian

William “Bill” Garrity’s career in university libraries spans nearly 35 years. He currently serves as the deputy university librarian and chief of staff of the UC Davis Library.

As Deputy UL, he shares with the University Librarian overall responsibility for the University Library; as Chief of Staff, he is directly responsible for all of the Library’s 200 FTE personnel. He is responsible for the overall administration and operation of the University Library, with specific responsibility for library operations, services, and activities; staff management, structure, and coordination; internal and external communication; assessment and evaluation; and partnership negotiations. Bill also oversees the operation and long-range planning of the library’s four facilities — Peter J. Shields Library, Carlson Health Sciences Library, Physical Sciences and Engineering Library, and Blaisdell Medical Library in Sacramento — which together comprise 400,000 square-feet across both campuses.

Significantly, Bill is helping lead one of the most extensive projects in the UC Davis Library’s history — space planning for the library, including potential renovation and reconfiguration of the Peter J. Shields Library. Currently in its first phase, this multi-year project is focused on rethinking every square inch of Shields Library, which was last renovated in 1990. The overall goal is to recreate the library as an academic center of campus, so as to better serve UC Davis students and faculty and education, research, and scholarship, now and in the future. Bill and his team have solicited university-wide input to develop a vision that will guide the creation of new library spaces in the years to come.

Prior to coming to UC Davis in 2014, Bill worked in leadership roles at libraries and IT at the University of Chicago, University of Pennsylvania and Dartmouth College. Bill, who is a bit of a tech nerd, is passionate about empowering people and organizations to get things done. Bill holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Siena College and a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Chicago. He also served two years in the Peace Corps in Costa Rica teaching at an ag-tech high school and doing forestry work.
