Office of University Librarian

William Garrity’s career in research university libraries spans thirty-five years. Bill currently serves as the deputy university librarian and chief operating officer of the UC Davis Library.

As Deputy UL, he shares with the University Librarian overall responsibility for the University Library. As Chief Operating Officer, Bill is generally responsible for the University Library’s 135 FTE regular and 40 FTE student employees and the overall administration and operation of the Library, with specific responsibility for library operations, services, and activities; staff management, structure, and coordination; internal and external communication; and partnership negotiations. He is responsible for the operation and long-range planning of the Library’s three facilities — Peter J. Shields Library, Carlson Health Sciences Library, and Blaisdell Medical Library in Sacramento — which together comprise nearly 400,000 square feet across both campuses.

Before coming to UC Davis in 2014, Bill worked in leadership roles at libraries and IT at the University of Chicago, University of Pennsylvania, and Dartmouth College/Geisel School of Medicine and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health. Bill holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Siena College and a master’s degree in Library and information science from the University of Chicago. He also served two years in the Peace Corps in Costa Rica teaching at an ag-tech high school and doing forestry work.
