Placing Materials on Course Reserves
For Use by Instructors and Course Contact Persons

Reserves Services houses required or recommended reading for courses. Course Reserves include: books, journal or newspaper articles, course readers, book chapters, videos, and DVDs.

Course Reserves List Submission

Instructors should use the Reserves List Submission Form to place materials on Course Reserves. This form will allow you to update previous lists or create a new list.

To ensure Reserves readings are available to students by the beginning of classes, Reserves Lists must be received by:

  • the last Friday of August for Fall Quarter
  • the last Friday of November for Winter Quarter
  • the last Friday of February for Spring Quarter
  • the last Friday of May for Summer Session

Reserves Lists will be processed in the order received. Booklists received after these deadlines may take up to three weeks to process due to peak workload constraints and delays in retrieving loaned material or purchasing new material.

If the library does not own the requested material, a collection development librarian will review the requested material for possible purchase and addition to the collection. However, the library cannot guarantee that the items will be purchased or a date by which they will be available for use.

Media

Media viewing equipment is available in Lab 163, Shields Library. Instructors should use the Reserves List Submission Form to place media items on Course Reserves. Please read the FAQ for additional information.

Media Booking enables instructors to reserve library material for specific times, independently through the online catalog. You may book a title, pick it up on a specified day, and check it out for up to 2 weeks in order to preview and/or show to a class. In order to access the extended loan period, a current Course Reserve booklist listing both the item and you as the instructor/TA must be submitted. To book a title, please follow the Media Booking instructions.

Copyright

Any material you place on reserves is governed by the provisions of U.S. copyright law. See the following library and campus pages on Copyright and Intellectual Policy, especially:

Personal Copy Materials

Instructors may place copies of personally- or departmentally-owned materials on Course Reserves. When an instructor elects to pick up their material(s) at the end of the quarter, items must be retrieved in a timely manner or they may become donations to the library's collection.

Please note, Shields Library must abide by all U.S. copyright laws and campus policies. When placing personal copies on Course Reserves, ensure you have documented copyright permission for any derivative works in your collection.
