Happy 150th Birthday, Peter J. Shields!

Today marks what would have been Peter J. Shields 150th Birthday. Shields, considered one of the founding fathers of the University Farm (now the University of California, Davis), helped to write the legislation for the creation of the Davis campus.

In 1972, the campus honored Peter J. Shields by naming the main library building in his memory.

We’ve created a small exhibit to celebrate Shields birthday. The exhibit, located in the library lobby, will be on display until April 6, 2012.

Here’s a quote by Shields from April 1925:

“Some day one of your students will write, not of the origin of the School, but of its accomplishments, and it will be a glorious story.”

Happy 150th Birthday, Peter J. Shields!
