24-Hour Study Room

The 24-Hour Study Room (part of the Shields Library Building) is open for use 24 hours a day. This room provides study space as well as two group study rooms. A campus telephone is also available near the entrance to this room. Access to the room is for registered students only. There is a card reader posted at the entrance which will read the Student ID card and allow access. Problems accessing the room should be reported to the Circulation Desk on the first floor of the Shields Library.

The library has 140 coin-operated lockers available for public use. They are located near the south elevators on each floor. The security guards check the lockers frequently to make sure there are no un-charged books. The guards also note material that appears to being left for longer than a week at a time. There are 27 lockers that can be reserved for quarterly use by students only. To be placed on the waiting list for a locker, please fill out this Form.

Lost & Found

Lost and found items are turned into the Circulation Desk on the first floor. Contact staff at 530-752-9850 with inquiries. Library staff attempt to notify owners of found items whenever possible.

Valuables (wallets, cell phones, keys, etc.) are sent to the Campus Police Department the first business day following receipt. Non-valuables are discarded after one week.

A free campus-only phone is located at the Shields Library entrance area (foyer). If it is necessary to use a cell phone or other audio-based communications device, please use the Shields Library courtyard, the foyer near the public telephone, or the outside plaza in front of the library.

Study Areas & Group Study Rooms

Most areas of the Shields Library are intended for quiet study. Active research and consultation may be expected in the areas adjacent to reference and service desks.

Group Study rooms are available for use by UC Davis students, faculty and staff. The rooms are unlocked and available for use whenever the Library is open. Two group study rooms are located on the second floor near the Main Reading Room; one is located on the North east corner of the 4th floor (Room 420). There are two group study rooms in the 24-Hour Study Room on the North side of the building. One of these two is designated for special auditory purposes—such as a sight-impaired person who has a reader.

  • Group study rooms are available on a first come, first served basis. Rooms may not be reserved.
  • Groups have priority over individuals studying in these rooms. An individual using a room must yield to a group.
  • Library policies with regard to food and beverages apply.

Study Carrels

Shields Library has 28 faculty study carrels that are available to members of the Academic Senate and to research titles of the Academic Federation. Emeriti faculty members are eligible for carrels. Retired employees, visiting scholars, and appointees "without salary" are not eligible for carrels. Faculty carrels are assigned for library-centered projects requiring use and storage for significant amounts of library material. Faculty carrels are not intended for use as study or office space.

Assignments are made for a maximum of one year and all carrels expire June 30. Renewals are allowed if there are a reasonable number of vacancies. If a waiting list develops, those who have had carrels the longest will be asked to relinquish their carrels. Assignments are made on a first-come, first-served basis, regardless of seniority, with a waiting list kept in chronological order. Double assignments to a single carrel will be made if requested by both parties.

To be placed on the waiting list for a faculty carrel, please fill out this Faculty Form.

Graduate Students

Shields Library has 35 graduate study carrels available first to PhD students advanced to candidacy, then to other PhD candidates, and then to Masters students depending on availability. Students on PELP are not eligible for carrels.

Assignments are made for one year to the nearest beginning of a quarter. At the end of the assignment, the occupant must vacate the carrel. Graduate study carrels may not be renewed. Assignments will be made according to the waiting list kept in chronological order. Double assignments to a single carrel may be made if requested by both parties.
